A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?”  Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.  The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter.  It depends on how long you try to hold it.  If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem.  If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm.  If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.

In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.  “That’s the way it is with stress management.  If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.”
“As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.  When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.”

“So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down.  Don’t carry it home.  You can pick it up tomorrow.  Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can.  Relax, and pick them up later after you’ve rested.  Life is short.  Enjoy it!”

I Need an Angel Receives 2015 Best of Scottsdale Award

Scottsdale Award Program Honors the Achievement

SCOTTSDALE July 2, 2015 — I Need an Angel has been selected for the 2015 Best of Scottsdale Award in the Home Health Care Service category by the Scottsdale Award Program.

Each year, the Scottsdale Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Scottsdale area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2015 Scottsdale Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Scottsdale Award Program and data provided by third parties.

We have all hearpersonal_training_image.253102611_stdd the popular saying “If you don’t use it, you lose it”.  We all know the health benefits of fitness and exercise but statistics show 70 percent of Americans do not regularly exercise.  Philips Lifeline has provided us with some useful exercises to keep active and avoid falls.

For aging Seniors it is especially important to commit to at least a small daily fitness program.  Even 10 minutes can help maintain proper physical and mental health.  Planning to complete these gentle exercises once a day and even in our busy lives if you end up completing them just a few times a week you will notice a difference, over time.

At I Need An Angel our Clients/Families often require our Caregiver to assist with daily exercises.  It’s a great way to get active and to build strength.  Our Caregivers can be a reminder or cheerleader for those who have received recommended fitness plans or exercises from their medical professionals and physical therapist.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health “If exercise and regular physical activity benefit the body, a sedentary lifestyle does the opposite, increasing the chances of becoming overweight and developing a number of chronic diseases.” (1)

A few more helpful tips:

1) Avoid an empty stomach: You may find you have more energy during your activity/workout if you enjoy a small healthy snack 30 min before.

2) Stay Hydrated: You may feel bloated if you consume a large amount of water before your workout.  Instead drink water throughout your day, during your activity and after.

3) Walking is always a great exercise it is important to keep moving.

As always, speak with your doctor before making any changes.  The education pamphlets developed by Philips Lifeline in collaboration with registered physical therapist Maryellen Madden are available to pickup in our Scottsdale Office.

How much does stress weigh on YOU?

According to the National Family Caregivers Association, statistics show you age prematurely, your life is shortened, and your own health issues are costing you money when you are a family caregiver. Depression affects 40-70% of caregivers and ¼ of these people are severely depressed.

Some Statistics, provided by the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA):

  • Family caregivers experiencing extreme stress have been shown to age prematurely. This level of stress can take as much as 10 years off a family caregiver’s life. Elissa S. Epel, Dept of Psychiatry, Univ of Calif, SF, et al, From the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Dec 7, 2004, Vol 101, No. 49.
  • 40% to 70% of family caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression with approximately a quarter to half of these caregivers meet the diagnostic criteria for major depression. Zarit, S. (2006). Assessment of Family Caregivers: A Research Perspective
  • A wife’s hospitalization increased her husband’s chances of dying within a month by 35%. A husband’s hospitalization boosted his wife’s mortality risk by 44%. Nicholas D. Christakis, Professor, Health-care Policy, Harvard Medical School, Boston and Suzanne Salamon, M.D., Associate Chief, Geriatric Psychiatry, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Boston, New England Journal of Medicine, Feb. 16, 2006
  • Nearly three quarters (72%) of family caregivers report not going to the doctor as often as they should and 55% say they skip doctor appointments for themselves. 63% of caregivers report having poor eating habits than non-caregivers and 58% indicate worse exercise habits than before caregiving responsibilities. Evercare Study of Caregivers in Decline: A Close-Up Look at Health Risks of Caring for a Loved One. National Alliance for Caregiving and Evercare. 2006
  • Stress of family caregiving for persons with dementia has been shown to impact a person’s immune system for up to three years after their caregiving ends thus increasing their chances of developing a chronic illness themselves. Drs. Janice-Kiecolt Glaser and Ronald Glaser, “Chronic stress and age-related increases in the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6.” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, June 30, 2003

Do Not Become a Statistic. Our Team can Help!

INA Office PhotoI Need An Angel “Caregivers You Can Depend On”… It is so true and here is an example!!!

Here is what happened today.  Sometimes things go wrong.  There is no guarantee everything will go right all the time.  How a company responds when something goes wrong “that is very important”.  It is important to be able to rely on your Home Care Agency.  Very Important!

This morning one of our Caregiver’s who has been reliable for years, was on her way to a Client’s home, very early this morning and her car broke down –it just shut off leaving her stranded on the side of the road.

Now we know 8 out of 10 Clients join I Need An Angel because they cannot depend on other providers.  This is why…  The call came in and then, I Need An Angel came to the rescue!!!  We hear from new Clients all the time how other agencies make promises and then told them sorry I don’t know what to tell you, no one will be coming today.  What would that feel like?

We quickly responded, two office staff jumped in, one to take a company vehicle (which we have as a backup just in case) to save the Caregiver.  While the other office staff member went straight to the Clients home to pick her up so that she could arrive to her scheduled therapy massage, on time.  When we called the Client to let her know that a situation arose and we may be a few minutes behind schedule, she was concerned she would need to cancel her appointment.  No Need!

We are happy to report the Client arrived to her massage only 4 minutes late.  The Caregiver arrived shortly after, with the other office staff, to be ready to take the Client home, after her appointment.  The company vehicle was left with the Caregiver, and the office staff returned to the office.

At I Need An Angel, we are different!  We did not call the Client and say so sorry the Caregivers Car broke down, you will have to cancel.  The beautiful Client was not even inconvenienced.  We are different, because “Love is the first order of business with us”, we are happy to be “Caregivers You Can Depend On”

If it is this important for us to make sure this Client wasn’t inconvenienced and that she arrived at her massage, image how great it is to have us on your side if there were a bigger issue!

Our creative solutions help reduce those unforeseen things.

YOU have never dealt with a Home Care Company that is there for YOU, like we are, in home, hospital or facility.  Our 5 Star Awards, Our top 4 Ranking AZ and our reputation, proves it.
